James C. Stern immigrated to the United States from Japan when he was only a few years old, traveling with his mother and siblings aboard a tanker ship. Growing up in the 60s, he experienced what it was like to be both too hāfu in Japan and too “different” in America.
Against the odds, James went on to become an experienced and successful FBI agent, culminating as a ranking official at FBI Headquarters in Washington, DC. His last assignment was Chief of the FBI’s Asian and African Criminal Enterprise Unit. Overall, he spent close to 30 years in law enforcement, specializing as a polygraph examiner, undercover agent, SWAT team member, and significant agent assigned to numerous international FBI investigations.
In his upcoming memoir, James revisits some of the high profile investigations he was assigned to, including: the kidnapping and murder of journalist Daniel Pearl, the manhunt for Osama bin Laden in Pakistan, multiple murder investigations of American citizens overseas, the polygraph interrogation of Saddam Hussein’s bodyguard, extensive police officer retraining in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the Bosnian War, and more. After retiring from the FBI, he went on to contribute to a background checking tool that could help prevent prejudiced people from being hired as police officers.
James continues to consult in security as a Senior Partner for Global Security Consulting, and he also still conducts global private polygraph examinations. In his free time, he volunteers with his former high school’s program for students aspiring to a career in government service. He also writes children’s books about his four dachshund, the proceeds of which he donates to animal-related charities.
